MANTECA HISTORY

It is planned that the postal service will deliver mail within Manteca by 1949

His resignation comes as a surprise to those who have admired the work of city marshal Maro Litchfield in the town's history. It was too small a salary for him to remain in the position and he resigned. According to Joshua Cowell, F. M. Roundtree will take over as mayor.

The committee responsible for planning the joint dinner between the Chamber of Commerce and Lions Club this evening at Hotel Manteca is pleased to announce that all plans have been carried out. L. M. Morris of Modesto will be the main speaker, with toastmaster Dr. A. J. Whitaker, president of the Lions Club serving as toastmaster.

As of last Thursday noon, A. H. Veith had handed his gavel over to his successor, F. Y. Kraft. As the outgoing president turned in his resignation letter, he thanked the directors and members for their loyalty and wished his successor the same.

Manteca has been recommended for city mail delivery by an inspector, despite postal authorities still not approving the service. Postmaster J. M. Luck, however, cannot be given any more information until the department indicates that he should establish delivery services.

The Board of Trustees debated Monday night how to deal with the influx of new students in the elementary schools. In Neil Hafley's opinion, another new school will be needed before too long. One more year without double sessions was possible, but after that more classrooms would be needed.

A community's highest honors were presented at the MRPS Hall on Saturday night during the Jaycees 21 distinguished award banquet. John Gatto, local manager of the Bank of America, was named Man of the Year. Among the outstanding young men of the year was McFall, Burnett and Martin attorney Duane Martin.

A resounding success by its sponsors, the John McFall Recognition Dinner, which drew 780 friends and supporters to St. Anthonys Parish Hall Saturday night, had all the overtones and some of the campaign rhetoric of the old fashioned Democratic rally. Those in the audience who expected McFalls' homecoming and first public appearance since his defeat November 7 by now-Congressman Norman Shumway to be unsettling were wrong.

A widened and safer Highway 120 bypass will require not only elected officials' efforts, but also the public's support. In Manteca, elected officials, business people and residents gathered at Carls Jr. restaurant to discuss the status of bypass improvements and options for securing more state funding for the project. It was organized by Mayor Jack Snyder.

For Manteca Unified School District, class size reduction and residential growth have become double-edged swords. As a result of the lack of available sites to place new portables, elementary schools are losing blacktop and playing field space. District officials unanimously approved Tuesday a request for 12 portable classrooms for yet-undetermined elementary schools.

California will become a dry state in the coming months as near-record high temperatures are expected in January. Despite being the wettest month of the year, January could prove to be the driest ever for the crucial Sierra watershed. That makes South San Joaquin Irrigation District General Manager Jeff Shields nervous.
